When I wanted to go on a trip in 2003--not as a tourist, but as a volunteer to a faraway place where I had never been before--I found myself in Uganda, teaching English and working with AIDS orphans. There I met Hanan Bulime, a teacher and visionary who had a dream for growing schools in rural Africa. Together we began the African Rural Schools Foundation which since its birth in 2006 has acquired two properties--one with a school we have built and another yet to be developed. We are exploring other locations as well. At this time we have over 400 children in school, with over 200 of them living there as boarders.
